ART14: GET ARTY!

Here is something from the weekend.  The second edition of London’s global art fair Art14 – a ridiculously expensive and meticulously scripted space. It is one of these events a la mode that if you are an art – lover, and especially if you are an art buyer, you should definitely visit. Art14 can hardly be considered as an exciting or spanking scripted space. However, walking around the fair’s booths with friends is a nice way to spend the Sunday afternoon. Here are some pics of a few mind refreshing art works which in my opinion are worth focusing on. Enjoy!

WAKE UP AND LIVE!

Wake up and live, little dreamers!

Wake up and live, little dreamers!

Happy Sunday, little dreamers! Living your life with your eyes closed is such a waste of time. You miss all the beautiful moments that you could cherish and all the opportunities of being happier that life offers you. Today’s secret of the day is: WAKE UP AND LIVE! It’s such a beautiful day!

TWO DAYS IN HEAVEN.

Lisbon's tram

Saturday, February 15

‘I want to go to some place where I can marvel at something!’[1] This quote from Eat. Love. Pray still resonates into my head although it’s been three years since I saw the movie. Today, however, this quote is more relevant than ever. I am in Lisbon and I am going to eat a lot, love even more, and pray only if necessary. And marvel, marvel, marvel!

My day starts with a cup of hot green tea, eggs with chorizo and a breath-taking view. The ocean is restless and enraged today and yet it brings me peace. I put my clothes on and although I want to see the surf competition that takes place right across the apartment I decide to spend my time on something that I at least understand: art. Berardo Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is the first stop. It is a time consuming space as it offers more than nine hundred works from the Berardo Collection as well as a very wide range of temporary exhibition. It is also well-structured, easy to follow and free. On display are pieces from national and international artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon and Helena Almeida. As much as I enjoy being here, the lack of natural light is definitely killing me. I think it is time for a dose of Bailys and sun in some of the small cafes in the city centre. This is what I love about Lisbon – it is so unpredictable. The drink could easily turn into long lunch; the long lunch turns into dinner and the dinner into late fado concert. And midnight you can hear the true sounds of the city and beyond born out of the versatile and impressive night life. My day finishes in oBom, oMau E oVilao where the sound of the city is overwhelming: live music, laughter, clinging glasses.

LISBON

Sunday, February 16

This morning I wake up and I am in LOVE: ‘real, ridiculous, inconvenient, consuming, can’t-live-without-each-other love’[2]. I am in LOVE with Lisbon. And the thought that just in a few hours I have to leave this fascinating place is killing me softly.

If I were to describe Lisbon in three words they would be water, sun and bohemia! However, describing Lisbon in three words only is madness. Lisbon has so much more to offer.  It is ever-surprising, multifaceted and charismatic place, which you should approach with curiosity, explore every nook and cranny, and discover the soul and grit of the city with real character. That is why I decide to go downtown and just explore and experience: walk around the steep, battered and yet elegant and appealing streets; go to St. George Castle and just peer in the overwhelming view of the city for hours; sit in a small tavern and eat sapateira and pastéis de nata and watch the ever smiling and carefree Portuguese people passing by. With all this beauty I totally forgot that the people are not the only thing that passes by.  So does the time. It is time to go back to grumpy London, but se la vie. My luggage is already full so I could not bring even a bottle of Port wine or a slice of Serpa cheese as a memory from this wonderful place. However, what I can at least take home with me is the sense of freedom that Lisbon gave me: it got under my skin and left me a bit tad more open-minded.
